North Sumatera 10MW Mini Hydro Project
Ministry of Environment JCM (Joint Crediting Mechanism) Model Project Adopted in 2017

What is mini hydro power generation?

Though there is no universal standard for “Mini-Hydro Power Generation”, we generally call power generation of 10,000kW to 30,000kW plants as “small and medium sized hydro projects”, and especially less than 10,000kW power generation project is called “Small (mini) hydro power generation facility”
For small hydro power generation facility, run-of-the-river method is often adopted. This method is directly to take the water from the river without stopping the current nor storing the water in the dam, and generate electricity by rotating waterwheel that is placed in the flowing water.
Mini-hydro power generation is a stable and eco-friendly energy generation that uses general river, agricultural water, sand-trap dam, and water and sewerage system without using large-facility such as dam.

Features

We realize and develop low-carbon and a sustainable society through the spread of renewable energy by promoting and expanding the comprehensive technological capabilities of Japanese companies in the market.

Improving the Shortage of Power Supply in the Local Community

The shortage of the electricity in North Sumatera region in Indonesia is critical. Securing new power source is one of the most important political issues in Indonesia.
We contribute to improve the supply shortage by completing this power generation plant.

Contribution to Local Economy by Creating the employment

As well as inviting foreign entities to the area, we contribute to revitalize the local economy by creating construction and O&M jobs in the local community.

Comprehensive Technological Superiority by Japanese Companies

We partner up with Japanese companies with high technological capabilities that have rich experience for generator manufacturing, detailed designing, EPC contractors and optimize their service. We secure long-term stability for the business by adopting highly efficient equipment combined with effective administration system.

The First Run-of-river Mini Hydro Project Adopted as Model JCM Project in Indonesia

There are high potential needs and demands to implement mini-hydro power generation in Indonesia, yet no other power generation project has been adopted utilizing JCM grant. North Sumatra Mini-hydro Power Project is the first power generation plant completed in such method and we expect to increase the recognition of JCM grant system, stimulate more development and investment and spread mini-hydro power generation in Indonesia.

The Impact on the GHG Emission Reduction in the JCM Adopted Model Projects

This project aims the biggest GHG emission reduction among all of the JCM adopted projects in 2016.

Utilizing JCM (adopted Model Project in 2016) Outline

SION Project facilitates diffusion of leading low carbon technologies by implementing the project to reduce the GHG emission (including to collaborate with JICA and other governmental financial institutions for investing and loans to the projects) in the developing countries. We assess, report and verify (MRV) and appropriately evaluate contribution from Japan to GHG emission reductions in a quantitative manner and use them to achieve Japan’s emission reduction target.
